Footage filmed at Monza in Italy shows Ford’s future endurance racer lapping the circuit, offering the first listen to the hybrid V8 the American carmaker will use when it enters the LMDh class of the World Endurance Championship (WEC).

The 5.4-litre engine derives from the Coyote family of V8s found in Ford road cars such as the Mustang, though Ford Racing has reworked it extensively. Under WEC rules, the hybrid powertrain’s combined output is capped at 670 horsepower.

The prototype ran at the Italian circuit wearing a camouflage livery that concealed its final design. It did nothing, however, to hide the engine note picked up in the footage, which circulated online.

Ford’s stated goal is an overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a race tied to the brand since 1966, when the GT40 swept the top three places. Ford went on to win four Le Mans races in a row before the end of that decade, and came back in 2016 with a modern GT, taking the LMGTE Pro class.

The finished car is due to be unveiled on Thanksgiving, November 26. The new WEC season gets under way in Qatar in March 2027.
