An interministerial committee will be set up to track price fluctuations and protect the purchasing power of Moroccans, the Head of Government’s office said in a statement following a meeting chaired by Head of Government Fatima Al-Zahra Al-Mansouri in Rabat on Tuesday.

The committee will bring together all relevant government departments and meet on a regular basis. Its task is to follow price movements and take the steps needed to shield households, with particular attention to products in high demand, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

Mansouri opened the meeting with a review of the national economic situation and the impact of price swings on the domestic market. She said the government was fully aware of the current economic climate and of the burden weighing on Moroccan families, poor and middle-income groups in particular.

She described protecting purchasing power and preserving social cohesion as “an absolute priority in implementing the government programme”, adding that the executive would spare no effort in responding responsibly and effectively to rapid international changes.

According to the statement, the government will also draw up and implement practical, concrete and effective measures to ease the effect of rising prices on daily life, keep prices stable and ensure the national market is normally supplied with basic goods.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of the Interior, the Secretary General of the Government, the Minister of Economy, Finance and Public Efficiency, the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries and Food Sovereignty, the Minister of Industry, Trade, Investment and Economic Integration, and the Minister of Transport and Logistics.
