Abd al-Latif Hammoushi, Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance, has granted an exceptional promotion in rank to a police officer seriously injured after being deliberately run over while on duty in Agadir, the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) said in a statement.

The officer, a senior police brigadier with the mobile motorcycle unit of the Agadir Security Prefecture, has been raised to the rank of security officer. The DGSN said the decision recognises his strong professional sense, his heavy sacrifice and the selflessness he showed during an intervention on a public street.

A car driver hit the policeman several times on purpose after the officer tried to stop him, according to the statement. The motorist had refused to comply and forced his way through a checkpoint set up at the entrance to the city, leaving the officer with serious injuries.

Police in Agadir arrested three people on the morning of Thursday, October 29, among them the driver of a private car. They are suspected of drunk driving, failure to comply, deliberately harming a police officer on duty and complicity.

Initial findings show the driver ignored a signal to stop at the checkpoint at the northern entrance to Agadir and drove on, prompting a motorcycle patrol to intervene on Mohammed V Avenue. As officers tried to halt him, he struck one of them, reversed over him and fled. He was later caught along with two passengers, who were found to be drunk.

The injured officer was taken to the university hospital centre for treatment. The three suspects were placed in police custody for the judicial investigation, conducted under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office.

The DGSN said the promotion applies Article 29 of the statute governing national security personnel and the principle of state protection for officers injured or exposed to danger in the line of duty. Hammouchi has also instructed the national security medical and social services to provide full material and moral support and to cover all of the officer’s hospital treatment costs.
