His Majesty King Mohammed VI has granted a royal pardon to 907 people convicted by courts across the Kingdom to mark the first Unity Day, celebrated on Saturday, October 31, the Ministry of Justice announced in a statement.
Of the beneficiaries, 613 are currently in detention. The other 294 are at liberty.
Among the detainees, the ministry said 17 have been pardoned for the remainder of their sentences and 595 have had their prison terms reduced. One life sentence has been commuted to a fixed term.
For those at liberty, 72 people have been pardoned for their prison sentence or what remains of it. Nine others have been relieved of their prison term while the fine imposed on them is maintained.
A further 202 people have been granted remission of their fines. The remaining 11 have been pardoned for both a prison sentence and a fine.
The first Unity Day will be marked every October 31 from now on. The date is tied to United Nations backing for the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty for the Moroccan Sahara.
