Abu Dhabi now has a daily Condor service linking it to Frankfurt. The German airline’s first flight on the route touched down at Zayed International Airport (AUH) on Thursday, Nov. 5, according to a statement from the airport.
The new route takes the total number of flights connecting Germany and the UAE capital to 49 a week. That figure includes Condor’s Berlin service, announced recently, which also operates as a codeshare with Etihad Airways.
The Frankfurt flights fall under the same Etihad codeshare arrangement. Condor operates them with A330neo aircraft, and beyond Abu Dhabi the flight continues on to Bangkok (BKK).
A ceremony at the airport marked the first arrival. Senior figures from Abu Dhabi Airports, Etihad Airways and Condor were present.
Carsten Nørland, Chief Commercial Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports, said the Frankfurt link and the recently launched Berlin route would give travellers more choice. He said the two routes would also help grow tourism and bring the two markets closer together economically and culturally.
Haitham Al Khamis, Acting Director of Tourism Products Development at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, described Germany as “a cornerstone market for the emirate”. He said the emirate hopes to attract more German visitors.
Peter Gerber, Condor’s Chief Executive Officer, said Abu Dhabi had become a significant addition to the airline’s network. He pointed to the onward connections to Bangkok and to other destinations served by Etihad.
Wei Jin, Interim Chief Revenue & Commercial Officer at Etihad Airways, said combining the two airlines’ networks gives customers more choice when flying across Europe, Abu Dhabi and beyond. He added that the Bangkok extension strengthens links between Europe and Asia.
