The Gemini alliance, which brings together shipping giants Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, has announced a new maritime service linking Asia to the Strait of Gibraltar starting November 22. Tanger Med figures among the line’s main ports of call, alongside Algeciras.
The rotation begins in China, at Shanghai and Xiamen, before calling at Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia. The vessel then enters the Mediterranean to stop at Tanger Med and Algeciras, before heading back to Algeciras and continuing on to Xiamen.
The first sailing will be handled by the Danish-flagged container ship Maersk Edirne, set to leave Shanghai on November 22. It will travel through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal rather than sailing around Africa via the Cape of Good Hope.
The new link is part of a wider reorganisation of Gemini’s network, aimed at strengthening connections between Asia, Europe and the Middle East. It cements Tanger Med’s standing as a major logistics hub for global maritime trade.
