The National Union of the Moroccan Press (SNPM) and the Union of Mauritanian Journalists have called for a joint response to hate speech, incitement and disinformation spreading on social media. The call came in a joint statement issued by the two organisations.
Misleading news and offensive content, the unions warned, are being used to inflame disputes and damage relations between the Moroccan and Mauritanian peoples.
The statement carried the heading “For responsible media that protects brotherhood and confronts discourses of discord and digital incitement.”
Both bodies said they were acting out of a professional and ethical duty incumbent on press and union organisations. They described this duty as defending freedom of expression, entrenching ethical standards in media work, and helping bring the two peoples closer together.
