EU commissioner praises Morocco’s swift response to Ceuta migration pressure

European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica has praised Morocco’s swift action on Ceuta migration management and its cooperation with Spain and the European Union following talks with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in Agadir. The discussions focused on recent migration pressures around the Spanish enclave and efforts to address irregular crossings and migrant smuggling.

Šuica described her meeting with Bourita as constructive, highlighting the importance of coordinated efforts between countries to tackle illegal migration, migrant smuggling, and trafficking networks.

The European official expressed appreciation for Morocco’s cooperation with Spanish authorities, commending Rabat’s response and “prompt readmissions, in line with applicable law.” She said the EU recognizes Morocco as a close and long-standing partner in addressing migration challenges.

Šuica also stressed that the European Union and Morocco would continue working together on migration management and strengthening their Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership.

Her remarks came after a sharp increase in attempts by Moroccan migrants to reach Ceuta from Morocco in recent days. Following the incidents, Morocco and Spain agreed to reinforce coordination to restore border security and ensure safer management of the crossing points.

The EU and Morocco continue to deepen cooperation on migration, border management, and security issues. Rabat has repeatedly called for a comprehensive approach based on shared responsibility and international cooperation to address migration challenges.
