The death of former Qatar emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani at the age of 74 has prompted an outpouring of condolences from world leaders and international organizations, as Qatar begins a period of national mourning.

The Amiri Diwan announced on Sunday that Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani passed away in the morning, describing his death as a great loss for the nation. Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013 and remained one of the country’s most influential figures.

Qatari authorities declared four days of public mourning starting Monday. Government agencies and public institutions suspended work, while national flags were lowered to half mast across the country.

Leaders from across the region and beyond expressed sympathy to Qatar’s leadership and people following the announcement.

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan conveyed his condolences to Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the ruling family. He expressed sympathy over the loss and offered prayers for mercy and comfort for the family during the mourning period.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also sent condolences to Qatar’s emir, describing Sheikh Hamad as the founder of modern Qatar and a leading Arab figure. Abbas praised the late emir’s dedication to advancing his country and strengthening its position on both regional and international levels.

Hissein Brahim Taha, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, extended condolences to Qatar’s leadership and citizens. He highlighted Sheikh Hamad’s role in Qatar’s development and modernization, as well as his efforts to support Islamic cooperation and solidarity among member states.

Tributes from regional leaders and organizations reflected the influence Sheikh Hamad held during and after his tenure, with many recognizing his contributions to Qatar’s growth and his support for causes across the Arab and Islamic worlds.
