Spain recognizes Moroccan security officials amid deepening counterterrorism cooperation

Morocco and Spain reinforced their security partnership this week as Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance Abdellatif Hammouchi received Major General Luis Peláez Piñeiro, head of the Intelligence Commission of the Spanish Civil Guard, during an official meeting in Rabat.

The visit highlighted the growing level of cooperation between Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), and Spanish security and intelligence services. Authorities from both countries described the partnership as a reference model in efforts to combat terrorism and transnational crime.

According to Moroccan security authorities, cooperation between the two countries has reached an advanced stage through close coordination among police, intelligence, and security institutions. The collaboration has focused on addressing shared security challenges and strengthening joint operational capabilities.

During the visit, several officials from the DGSN and DGST received senior Spanish decorations granted under a decree issued by Spain’s Ministry of the Interior. The awards were presented in recognition of their contribution to operational cooperation and technical coordination between Moroccan and Spanish security agencies.

Moroccan authorities said the distinctions demonstrate the strength of the strategic relationship between Morocco’s security services and Spain’s Civil Guard. They also reflect Spain’s recognition of the work carried out by Moroccan security officials in confronting cross-border threats that affect both countries.

Officials noted that the bilateral security framework is built on mutual trust, information sharing, and sustained coordination. They added that the partnership continues to play a role in supporting regional and international security efforts, particularly across the Mediterranean region.

Speaking during the ceremony, Luis Peláez Piñeiro described Morocco as an indispensable strategic partner in the fight against terrorism and organized crime. He pointed to increasingly complex regional and international security challenges that require stronger cooperation between neighboring countries.

The Spanish official said the recognition of Moroccan security personnel reflects their commitment to strengthening bilateral collaboration and addressing common security threats. He also praised the level of cooperation established between Morocco’s DGSN and DGST and the Spanish Civil Guard.

The meeting underscored the continued importance both countries place on security coordination as they confront evolving terrorist and criminal networks operating across borders.
