Rabat archbishop steps aside as Vatican opens investigation
Archbishop of Rabat Cristobal Lopez Romero has temporarily withdrawn from public duties after allegations of sexual violence by at least five women prompted a Vatican investigation. The 74 year old Spanish cardinal has denied all accusations and said he will cooperate fully with the inquiry.
According to an AFP investigation published on July 7, at least five women have accused Lopez Romero of sexual violence. The allegations led the Vatican to open an investigation and prompted the archbishop to step back from his public responsibilities starting Tuesday.
AFP reported speaking with a retired woman active within the Church who described repeated sexual assaults. She did not wish the detailed content of her testimony to be made public at this stage.
The news agency also reviewed a written testimony submitted to the Apostolic Nunciature in Rabat by another woman. In her account, she described physical gestures she considered inappropriate, including prolonged embraces and an attempted physical advance that she said she managed to avoid.
A source within the diocese told AFP that at least three other women had reported similar incidents. Some of the alleged events were said to have occurred during religious confessions.
Cardinal denies allegations
Speaking to AFP, Lopez Romero said he had informed his Church superiors and intended to cooperate fully with the investigation. He denied committing any sexual assault, sexual violence, or sexual harassment.
In a statement addressed to members of his diocese, he announced that he would temporarily refrain from presiding over public celebrations and participating in pastoral activities while the investigation continues.
The Holy See did not immediately respond to AFP’s requests for comment.
Prominent figure within the Catholic Church
Lopez Romero was appointed cardinal by the Pope and belongs to the small group of senior Catholic Church leaders who assist the pontiff in governing the Church. Cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to participate in the conclave that elects a new pope.
During the May 2025 conclave, Lopez Romero was among the most prominent cardinals. Several media outlets identified him as a potential candidate for the papacy.
