Omar Bekkali elected to lead Morocco capital investment association
The Morocco capital investment association entered a new chapter after Omar Bekkali was unanimously elected president of the Moroccan Association of Capital Investors (AMIC) during the organization’s General Assembly in Marrakech. He succeeds Hassan Laaziri, who served as president for the past two years.
Bekkali is Associate Director at AfricInvest, a pan-African private equity firm that has raised more than $2.3 billion in investment funds. He brings nearly two decades of experience in investment and finance, including 16 years at AfricInvest, where he helped develop and deploy local and regional investment vehicles.
His relationship with AMIC predates his election. He served on the association’s board during the previous two mandates and took part in strategic initiatives led by the bureau.
As president, Bekkali pledged to continue AMIC’s existing strategic roadmap while strengthening the role of its commissions and improving the association’s responsiveness to member needs. He said his priority is to support the development of a private equity sector capable of creating value for the Moroccan economy and expanding financing opportunities for businesses.
A new executive bureau will accompany the leadership transition. Meriem Zairi, Managing Partner at EmergingTech Ventures, was appointed Vice President. Najate Berrada, Director General at Upline Investments, will serve as Treasurer.
The General Assembly also renewed AMIC’s board of directors. Hassan Laaziri remains a board member through his role as Director General of CDG Invest Growth. Other board members include Khaoula Ramdi of Atlas Capital Private Equity, Nabil Hayat of Attijari Capital Management, and Mohammed Nasset of Red Med Capital Private Equity.
The association also named two observers to the board: Tarik Haddi, Director General of Azur Innovation Management, and Omar Laalej, Director General of Al Mada Ventures.
Reflecting on his mandate, Laaziri credited the association’s progress to the collective work of its members, board directors, commissions, and institutional partners. He expressed support for the incoming leadership team.
The leadership change comes as Morocco’s private equity industry continues to expand. Over the past 25 years, AMIC has supported 370 companies and mobilized more than MAD 40 billion, equivalent to about $4 billion, to finance businesses and infrastructure projects across the country. The association says these investments have generated financial returns while contributing to environmental, social, and governance objectives.
Founded in 2000, AMIC is recognized by the Moroccan Capital Markets Authority as the only professional organization representing Morocco’s capital investment sector.
Bekkali now assumes responsibility for guiding the association through its next phase of growth while reinforcing private equity’s role in supporting business development and economic investment across Morocco.
