Morocco has secured nine senior positions within African Union institutions after regional consultations among North African member states. The appointments expand the country’s influence across key governance and policy structures of the continental organization.

Morocco emerged with the highest number of leadership roles allocated to North Africa. The positions span institutional reform, migration governance, legal affairs, and economic development.

The country will serve as vice president of the ministerial committee in charge of African candidacies within the international system. It will also hold the vice presidency of the bureau overseeing contribution scales and member state quotas within the African Union.

Morocco has also been assigned to two specialized technical committees. These cover justice and legal affairs, as well as economic development, tourism, trade, industry, and minerals. Both bodies contribute to shaping policy recommendations at continental level.

Within the Committee of Permanent Representatives, Morocco will assume the vice presidency of the institutional reforms subcommittee bureau. It will also chair the environmental issues subcommittee and participate in the subcommittee on human rights, democracy, and governance.

The country has additionally joined the board of the Continental Migration Centre, where Moroccan experts are expected to contribute to its work and strategic direction.

These appointments reflect Morocco’s growing role within African Union structures since its return to the organization in 2017. The country has increased its engagement in discussions on economic integration, development financing, climate policy, and migration governance.

Migration remains a central area of involvement for Morocco at continental level. African Union frameworks have previously highlighted cooperation-based approaches to migration management across member states.

The appointments follow a year marked by African Union discussions on institutional reform, economic integration, financing mechanisms, and Agenda 2063 implementation during the 39th AU summit in Addis Ababa in February 2026.

With these new positions, Morocco strengthens its presence within African Union decision making bodies and expands its participation in continental governance processes.
