Morocco forest fire risk reaches extreme levels in 12 provinces

Morocco forest fire risk has intensified as the National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) warned that several regions face a heightened threat of wildfires between July 6 and July 12. Rising temperatures, dry weather conditions, and seasonal winds have increased pressure on forest ecosystems across the country.

ANEF based its assessment on predictive models that analyze forest density, vegetation cover, and weather conditions. According to the agency, these factors can rapidly accelerate the spread of fires once they ignite, particularly during periods of extreme heat.

Twelve provinces have been classified under the highest level of danger. They are Berkane, Nador, Taourirt, Guercif, Ifrane, Taounate, Taza, Khenifra, Al Haouz, Essaouira, Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane, and Taroudant. Forested areas in these provinces face significant vulnerability, especially those located near rural communities and tourist destinations that attract large numbers of visitors during the summer season.

Several other provinces are under a high-risk alert. These include Chefchaouen, Tangier-Assilah, Tetouan, Larache, Rabat, Sale, and Kenitra. Inland areas such as Beni Mellal, Azilal, and Midelt are also considered vulnerable due to current climatic conditions.

Meanwhile, Al Hoceima, Meknes, Sefrou, and Khemisset have been placed under a moderate risk category. Although the threat level is lower, authorities continue to urge caution as weather conditions remain favorable for wildfire outbreaks.

ANEF called on residents living near forests and visitors traveling to natural areas to exercise vigilance. The agency warned that discarded waste, open flames, and improper handling of combustible materials can quickly spark fires that threaten both ecosystems and nearby communities.

Officials also encouraged the public to immediately report any signs of smoke or suspicious activity. Early intervention remains one of the most effective tools for limiting wildfire damage and preventing incidents from escalating into major emergencies.

As Morocco enters the hottest phase of the summer season, authorities continue to emphasize prevention and public awareness as key measures to reduce wildfire risks and protect forest resources.
