Excess digital information takes a toll on mental health, studies show

The human brain now processes more information in a single day than earlier generations encountered in months, driven by constant notifications, endless news feeds and nonstop video content. Growing research in neuroscience and psychology points to a clear link between information overload and declining mental health, turning what was once dismissed as a matter of self control into a recognized public health concern.

For decades, discussions of personal well being centered on diet, sleep and physical exercise, while the quality of mental input received far less attention. That gap is closing. Specialists in attention management now estimate that the average adult is exposed to tens of gigabytes of information daily, prompting closer scrutiny of what people allow into their minds and how that exposure shapes their psychological state.

A brain still wired for a simpler world

The term infobesity, coined by American writer David Shenk in 1996, describes the harmful effects of information overload on cognitive function. French biologist Pierre Joliot has summarized the imbalance directly, noting that while communication technologies have expanded explosively, the human brain’s capacity to acquire, store and process information has remained unchanged. Cognitive psychology researcher André Tricot distinguishes between two forms of overload, one caused by an excess of genuinely relevant information that forces people to prioritize, and another caused by irrelevant information that generates mental noise and scatters attention without any real benefit.

This constant strain carries measurable consequences. Neuroscience research shows that continuous informational demand fuels what scientists call decision fatigue, in which the accumulation of choices, which source to check, which message to answer first, gradually erodes the quality of decision making. Psychologist Roy Baumeister, among the first to document this effect, found that an excessive number of successive decisions depletes cognitive resources and pushes people toward less considered choices.

The particular weight of negative content

Beyond sheer volume, the nature of the content consumed plays a decisive role. Doomscrolling, the compulsive scrolling through distressing news on social media, illustrates this dynamic clearly. A 2022 study published in the journal Health Communication, reported by The Guardian, found that among more than 1,100 participants, 16.5 percent showed signs of severely problematic news consumption. Within that group, 74 percent reported mental health issues such as anxiety or depression, and 61 percent described physical effects including sleep disturbances.

On a neurological level, repeated exposure to negative information overactivates the amygdala, the brain region responsible for processing stress, leading to chronically elevated cortisol levels. Over time, this can impair memory and reduce concentration. A 2020 study published in Science Advances by researcher Elizabeth Holman and colleagues found that individuals with heavy exposure to negative news reported significantly higher levels of psychological distress, regardless of their baseline anxiety levels.

A more recent 2024 study published in Computers in Human Behavior Reports, conducted among university students in the United States and Iran, identified a connection between doomscrolling and a form of existential anxiety linked to generalized distrust of others. The researchers noted that this pattern held across two markedly different cultural contexts, suggesting a universal psychological mechanism rather than a localized effect.

Social media as a documented driver

Social media use occupies a central place in this picture. In December 2025, the French health safety agency ANSES published a collective expert report concluding that social media use negatively affects adolescent health, citing disrupted sleep, body image issues linked to social comparison, and a confirmed contribution to anxiety and depressive disorders. A parliamentary inquiry committee spent six months specifically examining the psychological effects of TikTok on minors, reflecting the growing institutional weight given to the issue.

These effects extend well beyond younger users. A cross sectional study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine involving nearly 2,000 adults aged 19 to 32 found a correlation between the level of social media consumption and the risk of depressive symptoms. Sleep repeatedly emerges as a mediating factor in this research, with multiple studies linking extended social media use to shorter sleep duration and reduced sleep quality, both of which contribute to depressive symptoms.

Regaining control over mental input

Practical solutions are emerging from the available research. A British study found that just one week away from social media significantly reduced anxiety and depression among participants, with measurable improvements in productivity and sleep quality. Major smartphone manufacturers have since integrated screen time tracking tools, reflecting an awareness now shared across the technology industry itself.

Experts also recommend a more qualitative approach to information consumption, setting specific times to check the news rather than remaining constantly accessible, diversifying sources to avoid echo chambers, and favoring longer, contextualized formats over continuous scrolling through fragmented content. In Scandinavian countries, public awareness campaigns have promoted more deliberate news consumption habits, built around the idea that consuming less but better serves mental health more effectively than constant access.

What this body of research ultimately suggests goes beyond screen time alone. The mind, much like the body, is shaped by what it absorbs, and the choice of content people expose themselves to is never neutral. In a digital environment engineered to capture attention by any means necessary, exercising discernment over what one watches, reads and hears is becoming less a matter of preference than a necessity for psychological balance.
