Mercedes unveils redesigned GLA with up to 657 km electric range

Mercedes-Benz has introduced the third-generation Mercedes GLA, turning its smallest SUV into a model available with either a fully electric or a hybrid powertrain. Built on the new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA), the redesigned 2028 model delivers a driving range of up to 657 km under the WLTP testing cycle in its electric version, positioning it among the longest-range compact premium electric SUVs.

The all-electric lineup will be offered in two variants. The rear-wheel-drive GLA 250+ produces 268 horsepower, while the all-wheel-drive GLA 350 4MATIC delivers 349 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. Both models are powered by an 85 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery and feature an 800-volt electrical architecture that supports DC fast charging at up to 320 kW. Under optimal conditions, the system can recover approximately 270 km of driving range in just 10 minutes.

Buyers seeking a combustion engine can choose a hybrid version that combines a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and a 1.3 kWh battery. The setup enables short-distance electric driving at low speeds while also allowing energy recovery through coasting at speeds above 100 km/h.

The redesigned SUV also introduces significant improvements in cabin space. Its wheelbase has been extended by 6 cm to 279 cm, increasing rear legroom by 3.8 cm and adding nearly 2.5 cm of rear headroom. Mercedes-Benz Chief Executive Officer Ola Källenius described it as the company’s “most expressive GLA ever.”

Inside, the vehicle features the latest MBUX infotainment platform. Buyers can optionally equip the SUV with the new Superscreen, which spans the width of the dashboard and combines a 10.25-inch driver display with two 14-inch screens. Mercedes has also integrated a new AI-powered virtual assistant that draws on technologies from Google, ChatGPT, and other providers. Navigation functions are enhanced through Google’s Automotive AI Agent running on Google Cloud.

Orders in Germany open on July 31, with electric versions reaching customers first. The United States will receive the vehicle during the second half of 2027 as a 2028 model. Mercedes-Benz has not announced U.S. pricing, although the outgoing gasoline-powered GLA starts at $41,500. In Germany, the entry-level GLA 200 Electric starts at €40,840.

The electric Mercedes GLA enters a competitive premium compact SUV segment that includes rivals such as the Tesla Model Y, Audi Q4 e-tron, and Volvo EX40. Despite its increased interior space, the new model remains noticeably more compact than Tesla’s SUV while offering advanced charging technology, AI-enabled features, and a choice of electric or hybrid powertrains.
