Italy faces pressure after Abderrahim Fakir killing sparks protests

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has condemned the unrest that followed the killing of Moroccan national Abderrahim Fakir in Bologna, while insisting that authorities must establish any responsibilities linked to the case with full rigor.

The controversy erupted after Fakir died during a police intervention on the outskirts of Bologna. The incident triggered demonstrations across the region, with protesters demanding accountability from law enforcement officers involved in the fatal arrest.

In a statement published on X, Meloni described the protests as “unacceptable unrest,” arguing that violence against police officers cannot be justified. She said individuals who used the incident as a reason to attack officers, damage property, and create disorder were seeking confrontation rather than truth and justice.

At the same time, the Italian leader stressed that the circumstances surrounding the Abderrahim Fakir killing must be fully clarified. She said the truth should emerge without prejudice and without leniency toward anyone involved.

Meloni also warned against what she described as attempts to delegitimize state institutions. According to her, turning members of the security forces into targets risks undermining those who serve the country on a daily basis.

The remarks come as members of Meloni’s government face criticism for publicly backing police officers and emergency personnel present during the intervention. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini expressed support for the two police officers and four emergency medical workers who witnessed the events leading to Fakir’s death.

While expressing solidarity with the victim’s family, Salvini urged relatives not to seek revenge. He also claimed that Fakir had been behaving violently and disturbing local residents before police were called to the scene.

The Abderrahim Fakir killing occurred on Sunday after a neighbor reportedly alerted authorities about the Moroccan man’s behavior. Videos widely shared on social media captured the intervention and fueled public outrage.

The footage appeared to show Fakir pleading for help and repeatedly asking officers to stop. He could be heard saying “enough” during the encounter. The videos also showed officers using pepper spray before forcing him face down onto the ground and restraining his hands with zip ties.

The incident has intensified debate in Italy over police conduct and the treatment of migrants and minority communities. Demonstrators continue to call for a transparent investigation and for those responsible to be held accountable.

Judicial authorities have opened an investigation into the case. Six individuals are currently under examination as prosecutors seek to establish the exact circumstances of Fakir’s death. An autopsy has also been ordered as part of the inquiry.

Protesters have rejected attempts to characterize the case as unintentional manslaughter, arguing that the evidence warrants a deeper examination of police actions during the arrest. As the investigation continues, the case remains at the center of a growing national debate over accountability, public trust, and the conduct of law enforcement.
