France praises Morocco after major crime crackdown arrests

France has thanked Morocco following the arrest of 16 suspects linked to serious criminal activities, highlighting the strength of judicial cooperation between the two countries. The operation targeted individuals suspected of involvement in drug trafficking, murder, fraud, and money laundering.

French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said the arrests reflect the growing effectiveness of cooperation between French and Moroccan authorities in combating organized crime. In a statement published on X, Darmanin announced that extradition requests have been launched for French nationals among the suspects.

For individuals holding dual nationality who cannot be extradited, French authorities have submitted judicial referrals to allow Moroccan courts to prosecute and try them under national jurisdiction. Darmanin thanked Moroccan authorities for their collaboration, describing the operation as an important contribution to the security of both countries.

The latest arrests reinforce Morocco’s role as a strategic security partner for France and the European Union. International partners have repeatedly highlighted the country’s contribution to efforts aimed at combating organized and transnational crime.

The issue was also discussed during the 15th High-Level Meeting between Morocco and France held in Rabat last week. The visit was led by French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, who said the renewed partnership between the two countries is already delivering strong results in several sectors, including security and defense.

Lecornu emphasized that France considers Morocco a key partner for strengthening relations with the European Union and addressing common challenges across Africa. Security cooperation remains one of the most important pillars of the bilateral relationship.

The growing importance of these ties is also reflected in French public opinion. A survey conducted earlier this year by Toluna Harris Interactive for MGH Partners found that Morocco is viewed as France’s most trusted partner in Africa.

According to the study, 72% of French respondents support maintaining privileged relations with Morocco. A significant share of participants described the bilateral relationship as highly positive.

The survey also showed that security cooperation plays a central role in shaping these perceptions. Respondents frequently associated Morocco with collaboration on counterterrorism efforts and the management of irregular migration, two issues that remain high priorities for both countries.
