A Moroccan flag accident claimed the life of a woman in the southern Spanish city of Algeciras during celebrations following Morocco’s qualification for the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The incident occurred late Saturday night near the San García district at the intersection of the Getares road and Avenida 28 de Febrero. The woman was traveling as a passenger on a motorcycle driven by her husband when the crash happened.
According to preliminary findings, the victim had a Moroccan flag draped around her neck. While the motorcycle was moving, the fabric became caught in the rear wheel. The entanglement caused the vehicle to overturn, throwing the woman to the ground and leaving her with critical injuries.
Emergency services received an alert shortly after 11 p.m. Authorities dispatched local police officers, Civil Guard personnel, and medical teams to the scene. First responders attempted resuscitation measures and used an automated external defibrillator, but the woman did not regain consciousness.
Medical personnel continued treatment before transporting her to Hospital Punta Europa in Algeciras. Doctors later confirmed her death.
Authorities have not officially confirmed the victim’s age. Spanish media reports have provided conflicting information, with some outlets reporting she was 39 years old and others stating she was 26.
As part of the investigation, police administered a breathalyzer test to the motorcycle driver. The result showed no alcohol consumption.
The Algeciras Local Police have opened an investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
Algeciras Mayor José Ignacio Landaluce expressed condolences to the victim’s family and relatives, describing the incident as a tragedy that shocked the local community.
