Indonesia is seeking to expand exports to Morocco as the two countries prepare to resume negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement. Jakarta sees opportunities for products including palm oil, frozen shrimp, anhydrous ammonia, and semi-finished iron and steel, while Morocco’s position could give Indonesian products wider access to African, European, and Mediterranean markets.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is looking to deepen its commercial presence in Morocco by targeting products that it considers to have untapped potential in the Moroccan market. Indonesian Deputy Minister of Trade Dyah Roro Esti said Jakarta wants to use stronger economic ties with Rabat to increase exports and expand market access.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndonesia has significant yet unrealized export potential to Morocco for products such as anhydrous ammonia, crude and processed palm oil, semi-finished iron and steel, and frozen shrimp,\u201d Esti said in a statement in Jakarta on Friday.<\/p>\n
She also pointed to other products that could benefit from stronger trade relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n
Morocco has become an important trading partner for Indonesia, particularly as a supplier of strategic goods including fertilizers and aluminum. Indonesia now wants to broaden the relationship by securing better access for its exports.<\/p>\n
Market access is among the main reasons Indonesia is seeking to accelerate negotiations on the Indonesia-Morocco Trade Agreement. The two countries aim to complete the agreement by 2027.<\/p>\n
During a virtual meeting with Morocco’s Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Omar Hejira on Thursday, Esti said restarting the negotiations could help both countries increase the economic benefits of their bilateral relationship.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is prepared to work with Morocco to speed up the negotiations, Esti said. She also called for the current momentum in bilateral relations to be used to turn political ties into economic benefits that can be sustained over time.<\/p>\n
The negotiations are expected to address a practical timetable, continue discussions based on existing drafts, and establish balanced targets for market access on both sides.<\/p>\n
The proposed framework could provide a basis for further reducing barriers to trade between the two countries and creating more opportunities for businesses in both markets.<\/p>\n
Trade between Indonesia and Morocco reached $235 million in 2025, an increase of 33% from the previous year. The upward trend continued in the first five months of 2026, when bilateral trade increased 37% year on year to $180 million.<\/p>\n
Indonesia exported $154.9 million worth of goods to Morocco in 2025. Its main exports included coffee, pneumatic tires, animal and vegetable fats and oils, margarine, processed food, and coal.<\/p>\n
Morocco exported $80.1 million worth of goods to Indonesia during the same year. These exports mainly included mineral and chemical fertilizers, phosphate fertilizers, unwrought aluminum, and women’s clothing.<\/p>\n
Esti also highlighted the geographic advantages offered by the two countries. Morocco can serve as a gateway for Indonesian products to African, European, and Mediterranean markets, while Indonesia could offer Morocco greater access to ASEAN and wider Indo-Pacific markets.<\/p>\n
The resumption of negotiations therefore comes as bilateral trade is already expanding, with both sides seeking to use a future agreement to widen market access and strengthen their economic relationship.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
