People look for better jobs, more fulfilling relationships, suitable homes and more stimulating social circles. But when every decision must be optimized, the effort to improve can turn into permanent dissatisfaction.

The issue is not the desire to progress. It emerges when the existence of other options makes it difficult to commit to the one already chosen. In a society where comparisons are available within seconds, staying with a decision can become harder than making it.

Psychologist Barry Schwartz has studied this pattern through the concept of maximization. He distinguishes between people who choose an option that meets their needs and those who want to identify the best possible option before deciding. The second approach may appear rational, since comparing alternatives can prevent mistakes. Yet an endless search for the optimal choice can also create doubt and regret.

Once a decision has been made, rejected alternatives remain visible in the mind. A person may wonder whether another job would have been better, whether another relationship would have been more compatible or whether another career path would have offered greater opportunities. Schwartz’s research has linked maximization with higher levels of regret and dissatisfaction after decisions.

Relationships are particularly exposed to this logic. Dating applications have expanded the number of people users can meet, but this abundance can also change how they perceive commitment. A conversation can end quickly, a profile can be replaced by another and a new relationship can be abandoned when another possibility appears.

This can create the impression that a satisfactory relationship is never enough. People may continue searching for someone who appears more compatible instead of assessing whether existing difficulties are part of a normal relationship. Disagreements, adjustments and periods of uncertainty do not automatically mean that a relationship was the wrong choice.

The same pattern appears on social media. Users can compare their daily lives with a large number of carefully selected images of travel, professional success, relationships and personal achievements. These posts rarely show the full circumstances behind them.

The American Psychological Association has recommended limiting social media use among adolescents when it serves social comparison. It also stresses that digital platforms can have both positive and negative effects, depending on the content, the user and the surrounding environment.

The World Health Organization has reported similar concerns about problematic social media use among young people. In 2024, the WHO said the proportion of adolescents showing signs of problematic social media use had risen from 7 percent in 2018 to 11 percent in 2022 in a study covering nearly 280,000 young people across 44 countries and regions.

The figures do not establish that social media alone causes declining mental health. They indicate that certain patterns of use can become problematic and that the surrounding context matters.

The pressure to optimize also affects professional life. Career platforms expose users to promotions, international opportunities, business launches and rapid professional changes. Someone can feel that they are falling behind simply because they are constantly exposed to other people’s progress.

Housing and consumption follow a similar pattern. Online platforms make it easier to compare prices, locations, products and services. More information can improve decisions, but it can also increase the fear of choosing incorrectly.

The issue has become part of public health discussions. In May 2025, the WHO Regional Office for Europe published a policy brief on digital determinants of young people’s mental health. It described the effects of technology as complex and called for action from governments, platforms and civil society.

The WHO has also raised concerns about algorithm-driven platforms. Recommendation systems select content according to observed user behavior. This can extend exposure to particular types of material and reinforce existing patterns of use.

In January 2026, WHO Europe reported that more than one in ten adolescents in the region reported behaviors consistent with problematic social media use.

The challenge therefore extends beyond individual responsibility. It also concerns the design of digital platforms and the systems that shape users’ attention.

Choosing differently does not require abandoning ambition. It requires distinguishing between a necessary change and an automatic search for another option.

Before leaving a job, ending a relationship or abandoning a project, one question can help. Is the new option responding to a real need, or is it mainly reducing the fear of missing something better?

A relationship can be satisfactory without being perfect. A job can have limitations while still serving a useful stage in a career. A project can change without needing to be abandoned whenever another possibility appears.

Satisfaction depends not only on how many choices are available. It also depends on the ability to give value to the choice that has been made.

Digital technology has given people unprecedented access to information and alternatives. That freedom can improve decision making, but constant comparison can also make commitment more difficult.

The challenge is not to eliminate choice. It is to recognize when comparison has stopped being useful.

The search for a better life has become a common standard.
