Colombia has frozen diplomatic relations with the self-declared Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, SADR, and reaffirmed Morocco\u2019s sovereignty over Western Sahara. The decision marks a shift in Colombia\u2019s position and is expected to open a new phase in relations between Bogot\u00e1 and Rabat.<\/p>\n
Colombia\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the move followed a sovereign review of the recognition of the SADR granted by the previous government. The ministry also noted that the United Nations does not recognize the SADR as a member state.<\/p>\n
Under the new position, Colombia will no longer maintain political or diplomatic contacts with the SADR. It will also stop exchanging missions with the entity and will not support it in multilateral forums.<\/p>\n
The change also applies to Colombia\u2019s position at the United Nations and the Security Council, where the country currently holds a non-permanent seat. Bogot\u00e1 said the decision is consistent with international law, the UN Charter and Security Council Resolution 2797.<\/p>\n
Adopted on October 31, 2025, Resolution 2797 extended the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, MINURSO, until October 31, 2026. The resolution called for a political solution to the dispute based on compromise.<\/p>\n
Bogot\u00e1 linked its policy shift to an effort to strengthen its strategic partnership with Morocco. The Colombian Foreign Ministry described Rabat as an important partner and said the two countries should pursue a renewed relationship focused on shared interests.<\/p>\n
The two governments have identified several areas for deeper cooperation. These include trade, investment, tourism, food security, ports, logistics and Atlantic connectivity.<\/p>\n
The announcement followed high-level discussions between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Colombian officials. During those exchanges, Colombian Foreign Minister Omar Bula Escobar confirmed his country\u2019s recognition of Morocco\u2019s sovereignty over its Sahara.<\/p>\n
Colombian Vice President Jos\u00e9 Manuel Restrepo described the decision as a new beginning for bilateral relations. Bourita called Colombia\u2019s withdrawal of recognition from the SADR and its recognition of Moroccan sovereignty a historic decision.<\/p>\n
The Moroccan foreign minister also highlighted the economic potential of the partnership. Morocco could provide Colombia with access to African markets, while Colombia could strengthen Morocco\u2019s links with Latin America.<\/p>\n
The Colombian decision gives a political dimension to the broader expansion of Morocco\u2019s relations with Latin American countries. For Rabat, securing support for its position on Western Sahara remains a central element of its diplomatic strategy.<\/p>\n
