The approach comes as Tehran faces rising inflation, cash shortages and growing financial pressure.

Trump described the US approach as restrained and said Washington was engaged in only limited negotiations with Tehran. He pointed to Iran’s economic difficulties as evidence that pressure was affecting the country. He also cited difficulties in paying Iranian troops and credited the US naval blockade, which has been in place since April, with increasing pressure on Tehran.

The US president also highlighted oil prices, which he said were just above $75 a barrel. Lower prices have reduced some of the economic pressure of the conflict on American consumers and could give Washington more room to maintain its current strategy.

Iran has rejected direct negotiations with the United States. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said communications were taking place through intermediaries and accused Washington of continuing to breach the interim agreement reached in June.

Hormuz reopening remains tied to US concessions

The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the dispute. Iran and Oman are working on new shipping routes through the strategic waterway, but Tehran has made clear that a full reopening depends on concessions from Washington.

Iran is seeking sanctions relief, the release of frozen assets, compensation for war damage, an end to military threats and the removal of the US naval blockade. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei reiterated on August 10 that the blockade must end before the strait can fully reopen.

The position leaves the future of maritime traffic uncertain. Discussions with Oman may help establish arrangements for shipping, but they do not amount to a broader political agreement between Tehran and Washington.

Military action remains an option

Despite the shift toward economic pressure, Washington has not ruled out military action. Vice President JD Vance said the United States was using diplomatic, economic and military tools as part of its strategy toward Iran.

The combination of economic restrictions and diplomatic pressure allows Washington to maintain leverage without immediately expanding military operations. For Tehran, however, continued pressure comes as the country faces serious economic constraints.

The situation also carries consequences beyond the US-Iran dispute. Any prolonged disruption around the Strait of Hormuz could affect global energy markets and shipping routes. The waterway remains a key route for international oil and gas shipments.

The next stage of the crisis will depend on whether indirect talks can produce movement on sanctions, frozen Iranian assets, the US naval blockade and the reopening of the strait. For now, Washington appears to be giving economic pressure more time to produce results while keeping military options available.

US President Donald Trump is signaling a shift toward economic pressure on Iran as Washington…

[5
4693,2528,3361
post-5579","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-economie","tag-oil","tag-strait-of-hormuz","tag-trump
["GET
