The European Union has urged Meta and TikTok to strengthen monitoring of social media after false claims about an open border with Ceuta spread online and coincided with a large migration movement toward the Spanish enclave. The EU also called for closer cooperation between platforms and fact-checking organisations.<\/p>\n
European Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen said the Commission discussed the issue with representatives of Meta and TikTok on Friday. She said platforms should take stronger action to protect the integrity of the digital space during crises and called for improved monitoring and cooperation with fact-checkers.<\/p>\n
The discussions followed the rapid circulation of online messages claiming that people could enter Ceuta because the border had been opened. Posts and videos circulated across several social media platforms and contributed to confusion over Spain’s migration policies and border controls.<\/p>\n
The episode has prompted questions about the role of online misinformation in accelerating the movement toward Ceuta. Reports have identified misleading videos and messages on platforms including TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, while some content also circulated through private messaging channels. Investigations have not established conclusive evidence of a coordinated campaign behind the initial rumor.<\/p>\n
EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner described the episode as a test for European border security and the bloc’s ability to respond to disinformation. He said criminal smuggling networks and false information had contributed to the crossings, while stressing that it remained too early to establish who was responsible for the online activity.<\/p>\n
Brunner called for stronger capacity to identify disinformation trends and closer cooperation between EU institutions, Europol and other agencies. The aim is to detect emerging campaigns before false claims can trigger further movements toward the border.<\/p>\n
The Ceuta crisis has also intensified political debate over migration in Europe. Right-wing and far-right groups have used the episode to argue for tougher migration controls.
