Ceuta authorities estimate that between 8,000 and 11,000 migrants remain in the Spanish enclave after the mass crossings of July 30. The figure conflicts with Spanish media reports that put the number at between 2,000 and 3,000.<\/p>\n
Ceuta President Juan Vivas called on Saturday for the return of migrants still in the enclave. He described their return as the only way to address what he called an unsustainable situation.<\/p>\n
Vivas also challenged claims that Ceuta had returned to normal after the mass crossings. He said thousands of people remain in the streets, while others are sheltering in mountains and on beaches without adequate protection or access to basic needs.<\/p>\n
The crossings occurred during the final days of July, when tens of thousands of migrants attempted to reach Ceuta. Spanish authorities said at least 80,000 people entered the enclave and reported 88 deaths. Moroccan authorities put the number of people involved at around 40,000 and reported 14 deaths.<\/p>\n
Most of those who reached Ceuta have since returned to Morocco. Some returned voluntarily, while others were sent back by authorities.<\/p>\n
The situation has also raised concerns about unaccompanied minors. Earlier this year, AFP reported that hundreds of children were sleeping in the streets, including girls considered vulnerable to exploitation, trafficking and abuse.<\/p>\n
AFP estimated that around 2,000 migrants remained in Ceuta at the time, including more than 1,000 unaccompanied minors who were unwilling to return to Morocco.
