Rubin Observatory released a panoramic image containing more than 500,000 galaxies and 50,000 stars. Produced using the world&#8217;s largest digital camera, the image marks a major milestone for the observatory as it begins a decade-long mission to map the universe with exceptional precision.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-start=\"466\" data-end=\"806\">The panoramic view was created by combining hundreds of individual observations rather than a single exposure. This approach allowed astronomers to detect the faint light emitted by distant celestial objects, revealing spiral galaxies, smooth elliptical galaxies, merging systems, and ancient red galaxies dating back to the early universe.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-start=\"808\" data-end=\"1308\">Captured with the observatory&#8217;s 3.2-gigapixel LSST camera, the instrument weighs approximately 3,000 kilograms and is roughly the size of a small car. It is mounted on the 8.4-meter Simonyi Survey Telescope at Cerro Pach\u00f3n in Chile. The image forms part of the observatory&#8217;s Data Preview 2 release, which combines science validation observations collected between April 2025 and January 2026 across roughly 3,000 square degrees of the southern sky, about one-sixth of the visible Southern Hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-start=\"1310\" data-end=\"1816\">The <strong data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1330\">COSMOS field<\/strong> has played a central role in astronomy since the Hubble Space Telescope began observing it in 2003. Located away from the dense plane of the Milky Way, the region offers a relatively unobstructed view of the distant universe with minimal interference from stars and interstellar dust. Because the light from distant galaxies has traveled for billions of years before reaching Earth, the field enables researchers to observe different stages of cosmic evolution within a single dataset.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-start=\"1818\" data-end=\"2302\">The Vera C. Rubin Observatory plans to repeatedly observe the COSMOS field throughout its ten-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time. These repeated observations will help scientists monitor transient and variable phenomena, including supernovae. Bob Blum, director of the Rubin Observatory at NSF NOIRLab, said the deep COSMOS image represents only the beginning of the observatory&#8217;s work in the region and that future observations will demonstrate the survey&#8217;s discovery capabilities.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-start=\"2304\" data-end=\"2878\">During its primary mission, the LSST camera will capture approximately 700 high-resolution images every night for ten years, creating the most frequently updated survey of the night sky ever undertaken. Phil Marshall, deputy director of the Rubin Observatory at SLAC, described the COSMOS field as a valuable testing ground for scientists preparing to work with the survey&#8217;s data.
