The Abderrahim Fakir investigation<\/strong> has increasingly shared the spotlight with the migration crisis in Ceuta as Italy’s far-right political leaders intensify calls for tougher border controls following the recent mass crossings into the Spanish enclaves.<\/p>\n

The latest migration surge saw at least 40,000 people attempt to reach Ceuta, while more than 1,000 others headed toward Melilla, placing significant pressure on Spanish border security. The developments quickly became a major political issue across Europe, with Italian officials among the first to criticize Spain’s handling of the situation.<\/p>\n

Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini argued that the European Union should temporarily suspend the Schengen free movement arrangement with Spain, describing the measure as necessary to protect European borders and public security. His comments reflected a broader escalation in anti-migration rhetoric among Italy’s far-right parties following the crossings.<\/p>\n

At the same time, public attention has shifted away from the ongoing investigation into the death of Moroccan national Abderrahim Fakir in Bologna.<\/p>\n

Fakir, 42, died during his arrest on July 19 after police responded to reports that he was behaving violently. According to multiple reports, he was first struck by a police vehicle before officers handcuffed him and restrained him face down while applying pressure to his chest.<\/p>\n

Witness accounts indicate that Fakir repeatedly pleaded for help during the arrest. Four paramedics were reportedly present but did not intervene before he lost consciousness and died.<\/p>\n

Italian authorities subsequently opened an investigation involving six individuals, including the two police officers who carried out the arrest and the four paramedics who were at the scene.<\/p>\n

An autopsy has already been completed. Preliminary findings reportedly identified blood in Fakir’s lungs, while investigators also noted a pool of blood beneath his body at the scene. The findings have raised additional questions about the circumstances surrounding the arrest and whether proper procedures were followed.<\/p>\n

Bologna Mayor Matteo Lepore has remained closely involved in the case and has repeatedly called for a transparent investigation.<\/p>\n

On July 31, Lepore revealed that he continues to receive threats and abusive messages because of his support for the investigation. He announced that his legal team had been instructed to file a criminal complaint with prosecutors.<\/p>\n

The mayor also warned of what he believes could be an organized online campaign aimed at influencing public debate through large numbers of fake social media accounts.<\/p>\n

According to Lepore, the broader concern extends beyond personal attacks.
