These clay minerals can form only in the presence of liquid water, making this the first confirmed detection of such minerals beyond Jupiter in the outer Solar System.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" dir=\"ltr\">The findings provide new evidence of a violent chapter in Neptune\u2019s history. Scientists believe the planet once possessed a regular system of large moons, similar to Uranus today. That system was likely destroyed after Triton, Neptune\u2019s largest moon, was captured from another region of the Solar System, disrupting the planet\u2019s original satellites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" dir=\"ltr\">Ryleigh Davis, the study\u2019s lead author and a former Caltech doctoral researcher now at the University of California San Diego, said the discovery offers compelling new evidence that a catastrophic event completely reshaped Neptune\u2019s satellite system. According to the research team, the newly identified minerals preserve traces of that ancient collision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" dir=\"ltr\">The clay minerals could not have formed inside the small moons observed today. Instead, they must have originated deep within much larger icy bodies capable of generating enough internal heat to melt water ice. Researchers believe Neptune\u2019s original moons are the most likely source of this material.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" dir=\"ltr\">One of the study\u2019s biggest puzzles is that although phyllosilicates require liquid water to form, the spectra collected from the three moons and their surrounding rings show no evidence of water ice. Because the outer Solar System is dominated by icy bodies, the researchers argue the minerals must have been transported from the interiors of much larger objects where melting once occurred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" dir=\"ltr\">The observations also revealed notable differences among the moons. Proteus, the largest of the three bodies examined, lacks the same phyllosilicates identified on Larissa and Galatea. This suggests Proteus may have formed from a different region of the debris disk that emerged after Neptune\u2019s original moon system was disrupted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" dir=\"ltr\">Researchers also detected an unidentified hydrated mineral on all three moons. Its spectral signature does not match any known material in existing scientific databases, raising the possibility that it represents a previously unrecognized mineral or a combination of compounds yet to be identified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" dir=\"ltr\">The new results build on another James Webb Space Telescope study published in May, which suggested that Neptune\u2019s moon Nereid could be the only intact survivor of the planet\u2019s original satellite system.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The researchers conclude that Neptune\u2019s inner moons provide an exceptionally rare opportunity to study material that once lay deep inside large icy worlds.
