Morocco seeks support from the World Bank and the US Exim Bank to finance the Nigeria Morocco gas pipeline, a strategic project for African energy security.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Morocco is exploring new international financing options for the Nigeria Morocco gas pipeline, one of Africa’s largest infrastructure projects, as the country accelerates efforts to strengthen regional energy integration and secure long term supplies of natural gas.<\/p>\n

According to a Bloomberg report, Morocco is engaged in preliminary discussions with the US Export Import Bank, widely known as Exim Bank, and the World Bank regarding potential financial support for the estimated $26 billion project. Moroccan Ambassador to the United States Youssef Amrani confirmed that talks are taking place but did not disclose additional details on the structure or timeline of the financing package.<\/p>\n

The renewed attention surrounding the pipeline comes at a time when global energy markets remain under pressure. Disruptions affecting energy flows from the Middle East, particularly following tensions involving Iran, have reinforced Europe’s search for diversified and reliable gas suppliers. In that context, the Nigeria Morocco gas pipeline has gained strategic relevance as an alternative route capable of linking African gas reserves directly to European markets.<\/p>\n

Stretching nearly 6,800 kilometers, the pipeline will transport natural gas from Nigeria through several West African countries before reaching Morocco, where it will connect with existing infrastructure linked to the European gas network. Beyond exports, the project is expected to improve energy access across participating African nations by supplying gas to domestic industries and electricity generation facilities.<\/p>\n

Youssef Amrani described the initiative as the most ambitious infrastructure project on the African continent, highlighting its strategic value for regional development and international energy cooperation.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg also reported that a spokesperson for the US Export Import Bank confirmed early stage discussions with Moroccan authorities. The World Bank declined to comment publicly on its potential involvement.<\/p>\n

Recent political developments have accelerated the project’s momentum. On July 19, member states of the Economic Community of West African States signed the Intergovernmental Agreement governing the pipeline during the ECOWAS Summit of Heads of State and Government. The agreement establishes the legal framework required to advance the project into its implementation phase.<\/p>\n

As part of the new governance structure, Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company will establish a joint venture responsible for financing, engineering and construction activities. The project company will be headquartered in Casablanca, reinforcing Morocco’s position as a regional energy hub.<\/p>\n

The agreement also provides for the creation of the Pipeline Higher Authority, based in Abuja. The institution will supervise project implementation, coordinate participating countries and support investor mobilization ahead of the final investment decision.<\/p>\n

Morocco will host more than 1,600 kilometers of the pipeline, making it one of the principal beneficiaries of the infrastructure. The project is expected to stimulate industrial development, create employment opportunities and strengthen the country’s ambition to become an energy gateway between Africa and Europe.<\/p>\n

The initiative was first proposed by King Mohammed VI during his official visit to Abuja in 2016. Since then, it has evolved into one of the continent’s flagship regional integration projects, receiving growing political backing from African governments.<\/p>\n

Following the signing ceremony, ECOWAS Chairman and Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio expressed confidence in the project’s future, stating that citizens across the region should expect to benefit directly from its development.<\/p>\n

Amina Benkhadra, Director General of Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines, said the pipeline will reinforce Africa’s energy security, accelerate industrialization and unlock the continent’s natural resource potential while fostering broader economic integration.<\/p>\n
