The operation marks the first voluntary repatriation initiative announced by Congolese authorities amid growing insecurity affecting migrants.

The first group of Congolese citizens returned on Saturday as violence targeting foreigners persisted. Perpetrators have claimed they were targeting undocumented migrants, but videos circulating from the incidents showed attacks also affecting shop owners and migrants who presented evidence of their legal status.

South Africa has experienced months of protests and unrest involving large numbers of people targeting migrants. The situation has prompted a significant outflow of foreign nationals from the country.

According to AFP, at least 150,000 foreign nationals from several countries have left South Africa in recent weeks. Those departing include citizens of Malawi, Mozambique, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Ghana, and Nigeria.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo said the repatriation effort is part of a first voluntary initiative for its citizens seeking to return home.

South Africa has long attracted migrant workers from across Africa but has faced recurring waves of anti migrant violence since 2008. The latest unrest has renewed concerns about the safety of foreign communities living in the country.

AFP also reported that South African authorities arrested 69 people after a protest targeting migrants escalated into violence and looting.

Several African countries whose citizens have been affected by the attacks, including Nigeria and Ghana, have condemned the violence and called for urgent continental responses to address the causes of such tensions.

Earlier this month, Nigeria denounced the deaths of two of its citizens during anti migrant protests. Nigeria’s Foreign Ministry said the two nationals were targeted on June 28.

According to reports, the ministry blamed the alleged use of gruesome interrogation techniques for one death, with reports stating the man was killed by police officers in Pretoria. The second victim was killed in front of his shop by unidentified attackers.

On July 16, Reuters reported that Nigeria completed the voluntary evacuation of 1,490 citizens from South Africa following the xenophobic attacks. Nigerian authorities said the evacuation followed discussions with South African officials and reiterated their condemnation of the violence.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has repatriated 121 of its nationals from South Africa…

[9
3319,3320,3318,3317
post-3302","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics","tag-dr-congo","tag-migrants","tag-south-africa","tag-xenophobic-violence
["GET
