ECOWAS member states have endorsed the Nigeria-Morocco African Atlantic Gas Pipeline through the signing of an intergovernmental agreement in Freetown, Sierra Leone, clearing the way for the next implementation stage of one of Africa\u2019s largest energy infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n
The 6,800 kilometer pipeline will transport natural gas from Nigeria to Morocco before linking to the European gas network. The agreement establishes the framework for advancing the project and preparing its next development milestones.<\/p>\n
Launched in 2016 by His Majesty King Mohammed VI and former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, the initiative continues to receive support from Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The project is being jointly developed by Morocco\u2019s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.).<\/p>\n
Under the new agreement, the next phase will include the creation of the Project Company, which will be headquartered in Casablanca. It will also involve the establishment of the Pipeline Higher Authority, whose headquarters are planned for Abuja.<\/p>\n
These steps will precede the mobilization of investors and the preparation of the Final Investment Decision. A subsequent ceremony organized by Morocco will mark the signing of an agreement between Morocco and Mauritania in the presence of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.<\/p>\n
The gas pipeline is expected to cross 13 countries along Africa\u2019s Atlantic coast and connect with the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline in northern Morocco.<\/p>\n
The infrastructure is designed to transport up to 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually. Up to 15 billion cubic meters could be exported to Morocco and Europe, while the remaining volume would supply regional markets.<\/p>\n
Estimated at approximately $25 billion, the project aims to create an integrated regional natural gas market across West Africa. It is also expected to support electricity generation, industrialization, and the development of natural resources across the continent.<\/p>\n
The first sections of the pipeline are expected to enter service at the beginning of the next decade.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
