Volkswagen could eliminate up to 100,000 positions globally over the coming years as the German automotive group accelerates efforts to reduce costs and improve competitiveness. The potential total combines an existing restructuring program affecting 50,000 jobs and a further 50,000 positions that remain under evaluation.<\/p>\n
The first phase is already part of the group’s transformation strategy. Volkswagen confirmed on June 18 that 50,000 jobs would be cut across Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and software subsidiary Cariad. Of that figure, 35,000 positions are linked to Volkswagen AG.<\/p>\n
The company stated that legally binding agreements covering more than 28,000 departures at Volkswagen AG have already been concluded for the period through 2030. These measures are part of several restructuring initiatives implemented across different divisions of the group.<\/p>\n
A key element of the workforce reduction strategy is the “Zukunft Volkswagen” agreement signed in December 2024 between Volkswagen AG, the works council, and labor union IG Metall. The agreement provides for the socially managed reduction of more than 35,000 jobs at Volkswagen AG’s German sites by 2030.<\/p>\n
The restructuring plan is also tied to a reduction of 734,000 vehicles in installed production capacity in Germany, along with a reorganization of manufacturing facilities, development operations, and the company’s model portfolio.<\/p>\n
Volkswagen has maintained that most departures under the agreement will occur without compulsory layoffs. The company intends to rely on demographic changes within the workforce and negotiated exit arrangements. The 2024 agreement also preserved employment protection measures through the end of 2030.<\/p>\n
When the agreement was announced, employee representatives said no German production sites would face immediate closure and no workers would be dismissed for operational reasons under the terms of the deal.<\/p>\n
The prospect of additional reductions emerged on July 13 following an internal note from Volkswagen Chief Executive Officer Oliver Blume, reviewed by Reuters. In the document, Blume indicated that Volkswagen may need to cut around 50,000 more jobs worldwide to narrow its cost gap with rival companies.<\/p>\n
According to the executive, internal calculations show Volkswagen faces a cost disadvantage of roughly 20% compared with competitors. Based on a theoretical calculation, closing that gap could imply another 50,000 job reductions.<\/p>\n
Blume described the figure as a mathematical estimate rather than a formally approved restructuring plan.
