Morocco’s National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water has launched an international tender for the construction of the 362 MW El Menzel pumped storage power station, a project designed to strengthen the country’s energy storage capacity and support the national energy transition.<\/p>\n
The announcement was made on July 7, 2026, as part of Morocco’s broader energy strategy and efforts to modernize the national electricity system in line with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.<\/p>\n
The El Menzel facility will be built about 35 kilometers southeast of Sefrou in the F\u00e8s-Mekn\u00e8s region. The project covers engineering studies, equipment supply, construction works, installation and operation under an EPC contract that includes engineering, procurement and construction services.<\/p>\n
Energy storage has become increasingly important as renewable energy projects continue to expand. Pumped storage plants are among the most established storage technologies, using water transfers between reservoirs at different elevations to store electricity and return it to the grid when demand rises.<\/p>\n
Part of a wider storage strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n The El Menzel project forms part of ONEE’s strategy to expand Morocco’s hydroelectric storage network. It will join the Afourer station with a capacity of 464 MW and the Abdelmoumen station with a capacity of 350 MW, both already in operation.<\/p>\n The future Ifahsa pumped storage station, planned with a capacity of 300 MW, is also under development as part of the same national program.<\/p>\n Construction of the El Menzel facility is expected to take 48 months.
