Morocco diaspora remittances reached more than MAD 50.22 billion by the end of May, according to new data from the country’s Foreign Exchange Office. The figure marks an 8.8% increase compared with MAD 46.16 billion recorded during the same period in 2025.<\/p>\n
The steady rise confirms the continued importance of Morocco diaspora remittances to the national economy. Transfers from Moroccans living abroad remain one of the country’s main sources of foreign currency and household income.<\/p>\n
The Foreign Exchange Office also reported strong growth in Morocco’s travel balance surplus, which climbed to nearly MAD 40 billion. The surplus increased by 19.4% compared with the previous year.<\/p>\n
Travel revenues reached MAD 53.76 billion, up 14.6% year on year. At the same time, travel spending rose at a slower pace of 2.7% to MAD 13.77 billion. The stronger growth in tourism receipts helped widen the surplus.<\/p>\n
Morocco has introduced several reforms in recent years to strengthen the role of remittances in economic development. In June, Bank Al Maghrib announced measures aimed at improving access to financial services for remittance beneficiaries and increasing the contribution of Moroccans living abroad to national growth.<\/p>\n
The central bank said it has worked with financial institutions and other stakeholders to improve transparency and efficiency in money transfer services. Efforts have also focused on expanding digital financial access and lowering transfer costs.<\/p>\n
Among the key reforms was the removal of exclusive agreements that international money transfer operators had previously imposed on local partners. Authorities expect the measure to increase competition and improve service quality.<\/p>\n
Morocco continues to rank among the leading recipients of remittances in the Middle East and North Africa region. The inflows provide crucial support for household consumption, investment, and foreign exchange reserves.<\/p>\n
The importance of these transfers has also been emphasized at the diplomatic level. In 2023, Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita described remittances as a critical component of African economies. He warned that transfer costs across Africa remain the highest in the world and called for measures to make transactions more affordable.<\/p>\n
