The Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC) reported sustained growth in intellectual property activity and business creation during its 41st Board of Directors meeting, held on June 26, 2026, at the Ministry of Industry and Trade in Rabat. The meeting reviewed key achievements for 2025 and the first five months of 2026, as well as the approval of the 2025 financial statements.<\/p>\n
Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour emphasized OMPIC\u2019s strategic role in supporting Morocco\u2019s economic development and industrial policy. He said intellectual property has become a critical tool for competitiveness, economic sovereignty, and investment attraction as global value chains and industrial ecosystems continue to evolve.<\/p>\n
The minister also highlighted OMPIC\u2019s contribution to strengthening the \u201cMade in Morocco\u201d label, protecting domestic innovation, and supporting entrepreneurs, creators, and industrial companies.<\/p>\n
The board noted that OMPIC\u2019s overall activity has expanded by more than 55% over the past five years. In 2025, the office received 32,091 trademark applications, with Moroccan applicants accounting for 68% of the total. Domestic trademark filings increased by 53% compared with five years earlier.<\/p>\n
Patent activity also recorded significant growth. OMPIC received 2,983 patent applications in 2025, while filings originating from Morocco rose by 88% over the five-year period. Industrial designs showed similar momentum, with 6,193 applications submitted during the year. National applicants represented 82% of these filings, reflecting growth of 74% over five years.<\/p>\n
Business creation indicators remained positive. OMPIC issued 138,388 negative certificates in 2025, an increase of 9% from the previous year. The number of newly established companies reached 109,644, up 14.6% compared with 2024.<\/p>\n
The upward trend continued during the first five months of 2026. OMPIC received 13,951 trademark applications, 3,041 industrial design applications, and 1,176 patent applications. These figures represent year-on-year increases of 2%, 11%, and 7%, respectively.<\/p>\n
The office said these results have been accompanied by growing international recognition of Morocco\u2019s intellectual property framework. The country has improved its standing in global rankings, including the Global Innovation Index published by the World Intellectual Property Organization and the International Intellectual Property Index produced by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n
Board members also reviewed OMPIC\u2019s awareness, training, and promotion programs aimed at businesses, innovators, and research and development stakeholders.<\/p>\n
On digital transformation, the board examined progress achieved through several initiatives. These include the first year of nationwide deployment of the DirectEntreprise electronic business creation platform, the development of the IP Market Place platform dedicated to patent commercialization, and the expansion of the electronic patent filing system.<\/p>\n
The board also noted the launch of preparatory work for Morocco\u2019s National Industrial and Commercial Property Strategy 2027\u20132035.
