Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi is expected in the stands on Sunday for the Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona, keeping an eye on Brahim Díaz’s fitness before the Atlas Lions face Niger twice.
The La Liga matchday-10 fixture falls on Oct. 25. Ouahbi wants to judge whether Díaz is ready for the third and fourth rounds of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, both against Niger. The tournament itself will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania next June and July.
Díaz has had limited playing time in Real Madrid’s league matches this season. Still, the national coach plans to travel to Spain in case the winger gets on the pitch for the Clasico.
He remains a mainstay of the Morocco side despite his club situation. Ouahbi relies on him down the right flank, where he links up with captain Achraf Hakimi.
Morocco currently top their qualifying group with six points from two matches, having beaten Gabon and Lesotho 2-0 each. Ouahbi is set to name his squad on Thursday, Nov. 5, ahead of the team’s training camp.
